High platelets: understanding a raised TPK and repeat blood tests

A high platelet count is called thrombocytosis and needs interpretation in context. Platelets help blood clot. On a Swedish report the count may be labelled TPK or B-trombocyter. A raised result does not automatically mean a blood disorder or a need for blood-thinning treatment.

Why might the count rise?

A reactive increase can occur with infection, inflammation, iron deficiency or after surgery. Other situations require assessment for a disorder of blood production. One flagged number cannot distinguish these causes.

Your clinician considers how raised the count is, earlier results and whether other parts of the blood count are abnormal. Repeat testing may matter, but its timing depends on the overall clinical picture.

Information to bring to follow-up

Bring more than the latest platelet number
Information Why it helps
Earlier counts and dates Shows whether the finding is new or persistent.
Recent infection, surgery or inflammation Provides context for a possible reactive increase.
Haemoglobin, white cells and iron assessment Helps the clinician select the next step.
New symptoms and medicines May affect the urgency of assessment.

What should a repeat test decide?

Ask for a clear plan. Is the aim to confirm recovery after an infection, investigate iron deficiency or follow an unexplained persistent count? Ask who will review the sample and what happens if it remains high.

Laboratory reference intervals can differ. Keep the unit and interval with the number. Do not use a generic online threshold as permission to wait, especially if your clinician has already given different instructions.

Should I start aspirin?

No, not on your own because of a raised count. Whether treatment is appropriate depends on the cause and your overall situation. Someone else’s prescription is not a suitable plan for you.

When is emergency help needed?

Call 112 for new stroke symptoms such as facial weakness, arm weakness or speech difficulty, or severe chest pain and breathlessness. Otherwise, discuss the result with the ordering clinic. A vårdcentral is a primary care centre in Sweden. Call 1177 if you need help assessing new symptoms or choosing the right care route.
